Train Journey to Luxor

From Cairo we took a first class overnight train to Luxor.

‘Egyptian train is never punctual. It can be early or late,’ our guide, Safwat, stressed this to us at least twice.

Safwat sure knows about the Egyptian railway system better than no one else! The train left Cairo station 45 minutes late but arrived at Luxor 4-1/2 hours late!

But I have to say, it was a nice train. The cabin comes with a basin and mirror, towel, piped-in music and individually control lights and air-conditioning, and dinner and breakfast were served. Not bad really. And yes, the chugging, braking and jerking of the train kept me awake almost throughout the journey. Perhaps it was made worse by the two cups of coffee which I had earlier in the night. Fortunately the ‘bed’ was comfortable!

I spent the morning lying in the comfortable bed, watching the beautiful scenery flashed by, taking photos in between, chit-chatting and watching some of the members playing card games. We finally arrived at Luxor, a very interesting city, at 10:45am.

The comfortable ‘sofa-seat’ during the day is
converted into bed at night (below).
The semi-spherical ‘object’ on the right is the basin.
